Today we are going to talk about the story of a team created in Harlem, a neighbourhood from New York (USA), that had to fight during the last century against racism with 2 of the most powerful items ever seen: we are talking about basketball and Jazz music.
During the 20th century, racism was a very big feeling. Black people were treated like animals, they didn't have rights so they had to be hidden because of the fear.
Our story begins in Harlem, USA. A group of friends (all of them were black) met in an abandoned ship, and there they could enjoyed the 2 things that they like the most, music and basketball. Some people played basketball while the rest were dancing Jazz music. The mix of these 2 things made basketball players play with moves that were have nerver seen, they were playing like if they were dancing of the court.
After a while, this small team of black people started to play in the courts of New York against local teams and they literally destroyed every single team on the court. The name of the Harlem Globetrotters started to become famous in USA.
After travelling around USA to play games against small teams, finally the NBA (at that team the league was called ABA) decided to make a match between Harlem Globetrotters and Minneapolis Lakers, the champions of that year. The lakers were on a 102-game W streak and nobody could stop them. We have to remember that, in that time, the league only had white players, so it was the 1st time that someone could see black players in an oficcial event in the history of basketball. The world was amazed about what happened in that game: Globetrotters 61 - 59 Lakers. That happened in 1948.
The world was amazed of that and, 2 years later, in 1950, the Boston Celtics drafted the 1st black player in history of basketball. That was a big step for black community.
After that chapter, the Harlem Globetrotters started to travel around the world to every single country to show their particular way to play basketball. And thnks to them, black athletes started to be recognized in the world.
Until our days, the Harlem Globetrotters make shows all around the world to show the powerful mix of basketball and Jazz. Wait a minute. Don't you know them? Oh my God! Go to this link and watch them! What are you waiting for?
